Tributary presents: Over the Alps

We're pleased to share that Over the Alps is now part of Tributary Games.

Over the Alps is a choices-matter spy thriller set in 1939 Switzerland, told through interactive postcards written in invisible ink. It was first released by Stave Studios, where several of us worked before founding Tributary.

When Stave closed, the game was at risk of disappearing. We've stepped in as custodians to keep it available and looked after.

Taking it on came with a few things we wanted to do properly.

The first was an update to the Steam release, the game's first in some years, fixing a number of long-standing bugs and tidying up issues that had gone unaddressed since launch.

The second was The Devil's Quill.

Over the Alps was always planned as three stories. Two shipped: A Case of the Chateau Vercoli, written by Jon Ingold, and The King of the Mountain, by Harry Tuffs. The third was left unfinished when Stave closed.

Rather than leave the story incomplete, we rebuilt it from the surviving files into a free, browser-based release. It runs to 41,000 words and forms a full branching conclusion to the trilogy.

It's deliberately stripped back compared to the paid chapters, without their translations, animations or maps, but it carries the original location art and, most importantly, the ending the game was always meant to have.

You can play it free in your browser, on desktop or mobile.

Alongside this, we've set a new, permanently lower price for Over the Alps of $7.99 / £6.69 / €7.79, with a 50% re-launch discount running until the 9th of July 2026.

Tributary is a small independent studio, and sales of Over the Alps go directly towards funding what we make next. If you've been meaning to pick it up, or to play the chapter that nearly didn't make it, there's never been a better time.
